Supporting innovative archaeological and anthropological research in western North America.

We are currently accepting applications for our grant programs until December 31, 2024.

In 2021, Far Western Anthropological Research Group, a leading cultural resource management (CRM) firm with over 45 years of innovative research and publication, founded the Far Western Foundation. Guided by a board of directors that includes museum and CRM professionals, the Foundation provides awards grants to individuals and organizations in support of education, research, and community outreach, with a commitment to diversity and focus on Native American students, scholars, and Tribal organizations.

Since 2021, the Foundation has awarded over 20 grants totaling around $80,000. Grants range between $2,000 to $10,000, supporting graduate student research support, Tribal outreach and educational programs, ethnohistorical research, analytical and technical studies, archaeological field studies, and student financial assistance for archaeological field school enrollment.

Our primary geographic focus is California, the Great Basin, and the greater American West. We welcome a broad range of applicants, with particular consideration for students, early-career educators, Native American scholars and organizations, and CRM professionals. While our emphasis is on archaeology and anthropology, consideration will be given to students and scholars in aligned fields, such as Native American studies, geography, history, museum studies, and environmental science. Collaborative efforts between archaeologists and Native American students, scholars, and Tribal organizations are highly encouraged.
